FRIENDLY GUITAR LESSONS. (NO STRINGS ATTACHED).

When it comes to learning, every student has different goals and learning speeds. My goal is to find out what you want from guitar lessons. From there, I’ll design a program with you, specific for you!

Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate player or a former pro shredder looking to pick up the guitar again, I’m here to help you achieve your goals and make sure we have lots of fun along the way.

LESSON DETAILS

Topics covered:
Sight-reading, tab reading, technique, music theory and more. Lessons range from teaching chords to improvisation to advanced subjects. Just ask!

Lessons per month:
Each student gets 4 to 5 lessons a month, depending on the month.

Average lesson time:
30 minutes (can go longer upon request)

Typical agenda:
1. Set up equipment (I arrive 5 minutes early for this)
2. Tune up and touch base
3. Go over homework
4. Q&A
5. Topic recap or progression — If my student’s ready to move forward, we begin learning the next topic. If not, we focus on what we can do to help the student improve, be it a new suggestion, technique or by simply spending more time on the topic.
6. Close shop (unless I’m invited to stay for dinner)

Genres:
All musical genres (tailored to students’ tastes). I’ve taught “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “Enter Sandman” to two different students in the same day.

Books:
I try not to follow books exactly. Though they have their place, I’ve yet to find one that is very precise or exciting yet (at least for my students).

Children:
For my younger students, it’s my goal to keep them engaged through inspiring, entertaining instruction. It’s all about capturing a child’s interest, and teaching them in an upbeat, non-intimidating way that says, “You can do this!”. Kids get a fun, varied lesson and parents get a great investment.

Pricing:
$75 for the first month (introductory price);
$105/month after that

SIT BACK, RELAX AND BELIEVE THE HYPE

For me, nothing’s more important than knowing my students are learning, feeling encouraged and having a blast along the way. When somebody has something nice to say, it means the world to me. Below are some really kind words from some really kind folks. Kindly read on, if you’d like.

I've always wanted to play the guitar, and finally got around to learning. I was very fortunate to have found Jon Bobbe after a lot of research on the internet. Jon has been absolutely first rate from day one. As part of my research, I sent several emails out to local guitar teachers. Jon was the first to respond, and the only one that was genuinely interested in what I had in mind as far as learning to play the guitar. It just got better from there. Jon's instruction is very personalized to my way of learning, and my interest in music. Jon is very encouraging, and truly enjoys teaching the guitar. Sometimes I swear that he's more excited than I am when I make noticeable progress. He's very professional and kind, and is very generous with his time and knowledge. I would highly recommend Jon as a guitar instructor to all age groups, family, and friends, regardless of your particular taste in music. You won't be disappointed! — DAVID WOODRIDGE, IL

Jon, I just wanted to tell you how thrilled I am with the way you are teaching my son and daughter. They took guitar lessons at a storefront music studio for years, and the difference between their approach, and the academic and professional approach you take is very significant. My kids look forward to their lessons. What you teach them stays with them. You give them extra time, which is very generous! You are always on time and ready to work. I can't say enough about what a pro you are. Cheers and bravo for a job very well done. Please feel free to use this enthusiastic review of your guitar lessons on your website or wherever you see fit. Thanks for a continued job well done. — JUDD HARRIS, DOWNERS GROVE, IL

"I am 32 years old and have dreamed about playing the guitar for the last 10 years. Due to marriage and building a house I never found the time to really learn to play the guitar. I dabbled with you tube tutorials and books that I couldn’t understand until I finally gave up. One day, I was driving and saw Jon’s car advertising that he would come to my house and teach me! I knew it was a sign and I immediately called. The convenience of him coming to my house is priceless. I have a busy driving schedule and love being in the comfort of my home for the lesson. Jon is so patient with you and is able to slow everything down to your speed. After just two months of lessons from Jon I am now absolutely addicted to the guitar and look forward to playing it every free moment I can. I can’t tell you how happy I am that I found the Right Pick!" — WAYNE, BOLINGBROOK, IL

“Looking for a guitar teacher who’s talented, trustworthy and second to none? Look no further than Jon Bobbe. I’ve known Jon for over 10 years. My kids have grown up around him since they were babies. When it was time for my daughter Taylor to take music lessons, he was the natural choice. The way that Jon is with kids has always impressed me. His knack for empowering children gets them excited, and motivates them to challenge themselves as well. Best of all, he’s a big kid himself, so kids relate to him immediately. When it comes to Taylor’s personal experience, Jon’s really helped her grow and enjoy music more—so much so that she even wants to show me how to play. Taylor has the utmost respect for him; she really likes him and also enjoys the challenge of pushing herself to learn. As for Jon’s lessons, the convenience of having him come to our house so Taylor can learn while we’re able get other things done is invaluable. We all know how busy life can get, but that should never take away from the opportunities our children have, and that’s what Jon is all about—providing his students with opportunities to learn, grow and truly enjoy music. That to us, is a gift worth cherishing. Put simply, there are many guitar teachers out there, but only one Jon Bobbe. For anyone looking to play guitar, he’s truly “the right pick” in every way possible.” — CAROLYN GERARD, WARRENVILLE, IL

"Jon is a thoughtful teacher who invites the ideas of his students to make their lessons more meaningful for them. I would recommend him to any beginning guitar player looking for a teacher willing to give them the type of environment that they desire to learn in. Choosing Jon was certainly the right pick for me and I think he would be an excellent choice for any aspiring guitar player." — BOB NAPERVILLE, IL

“We wanted you to know that we appreciate all the work you have been doing with our son with guitar lessons over the last 2 months. Zack is 15 years old and finds guitar a way for him to relax and release. He has told us that you are funny, talkative, supportive, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and patient. We recommend you to anyone that is interested in guitar and music…Thank you for being a great teacher!” — JoANN, NAPERVILLE, IL

“Two and a half months ago I was naïve to chords and guitars. One day I started strumming my moms guitar and realized I wanted to learn more. I wanted someone to help me learn; someone patient and experienced. Then there it was. Jon has really helped me a lot, I'm amazed how good he plays. He makes it seem easy, plus he is very patient. In two months I can play my favorite song and I can start listening to songs and begun to figure out the chords. I'm really happy to have Jon as my guitar instructor, he’s is fun, dedicated and really talented.” — LESLHY, WEST CHICAGO, IL

"Kayleen and I want to express our appreciation for the attention, dedication and devotion that you have shown our son and daughter during their guitar lessons. We know their attentiveness and concentration sometimes wander, but you have never wavered in your patience with them. More importantly, you have always made us feel that our children were your most important students. Quite simply, we could not have asked fora better guitar teacher, you have truly exceeded our expectations and we feel so fortunate to have found you.” — DEREK and KAYLEEN, NAPERVILLE, IL

Quick Tips

FOR THOSE ABOUT TO LEARN, WE SALUTE YOU.

This is a section devoted to the quick tips that people sometime take for granted and think that everyone knows. It is also devoted to the mind game of the guitar, and a little technique and theory to boot! So read on young grasshopper, and hopefully some of these will help you out!

1. Practice
2. Practice
3. Practice. Yes youʼve heard this all before, but learning guitar is not a magical process for most people. It is not a super easy thing initially; you have to learn the basics and build on them. Remember, you have to learn, wax on, wax off, sand the deck and paint the fence before you learn the crane technique!
4. Keep the guitar out where you see it and play it! THIS IS IMPORTANT. I am guilty of this as much as anyone. I put my guitars away, or they are in their cases from teaching lessons, and I get lazy and do not pick them up! Keep the guitar out and you are more likely to pick it up and play it.
5. When you pick up a guitar and goof around on it, it is practice. Chances are when you are goofing around on the guitar, you are trying something we covered or that you have seen done. I do not think that anyone picks up a guitar and tries to sound terrible. You are trying to make music! Go ahead — pick your axe up and goof around for 5 minutes! It all helps!
6. Use your guitar as a vent. Feel your creativity has been bottled up? Had a bad day at school or the office? Just need to get your mind off of things? PICK UP YOUR GUITAR!!! It has been one of the most therapeutic devices for me. When you pick up the guitar, it hits your mental reset button. Music starts filling your brain where all those bad things once were. And best of all you are learning to play emotionally, which seems to stick in your grey matter more!
7. Chord changes are a mental thing. Yes there is finger positioning and all that, but when you are first learning chord changes, your nerves rise and you get scared that you are going to do something wrong. Let’s face it, you probably will, and that is okay! You have to make the “jump” from one chord to another. Ignore the fear and just do it. If you sound bad that is okay! The Cool-aide man will not burst through the wall and clobber you! Do it over and over, and then all of the sudden “CLICK!” you can do it! And then the opposite is true in that it is hard to do it wrong!
8. It is more important to play a chord correctly than fast. Especially in the beginning.
Play a chord so that you can play each string individually and hear the note ring out.
9. When you are learning chords you are developing muscle memory. Pretty soon your
fingers will know what shape to make on the basic chords and others will come more naturally.
10. There are 5 first position chords that all other chords are based upon. C,A,G,E, and
D. Learn these chords first, and others will come easier.
11. Take a break if you are getting frustrated trying to learn a chord. “F” is a huge culprit. Either put the guitar down and take a break, or play something you know well. Do not discourage yourself!
12. Every time you play something hard or difficult, you take one step closer to mastering it.
13. It is good to learn scales. Yes they can be boring, but they open up worlds of potential creativity.
14. Pay attention to your fingers at first. Sometimes if you move the bulk of your hand instead of individual fingers, it can make the difference between reaching a note and playing it comfortably, and stretching to hit it and not playing it well.
15. Guitar is not an easy thing. Practice and remember you do not play like Eddie Van Halen, you play like you, and that is good.
16. Need something new and fresh sounding? Getting tired of the sound of your guitar? Get some new strings, and or picks. You will be surprised in what a difference this can make.
17. Experiment with string gauges. Thicker strings sound much different than thin, but
thin are easier to play and bend.
18. Know your goals in relation to guitar and share them with me. If they change, that
is fine! Let’s keep on the same page and work together!
19. When purchasing a new guitar, it is not about the brand, it is about the sound and comfort. Try everything out! You might be surprised by the sound of some lessor instruments compared to some high end ones.
20. Amps should be tried out with your guitar, because every guitar has a unique voice in
an amp. Try all of the amps you can out. DO NOT get stuck on one because it is the cool looking one or the popular one.
21. If you hear a song you really like on guitar, write it down. See if you can figure it out.
Share it with me, and we can conquer it and add it to your guitar arsenal together!
22. Watch TV with your guitar. You can fiddle with it and practice a little during those boring commercials, and put it in the background for the funny parts of Sponge Bob.
23. There is no such thing as a “bad” style of guitar. They all have merits and resons why they are fun to play!
24. In the winter keep your guitar in its case as much as possible (but readily available)
with a humidifier of some sort in the case. You guitar is almost a living breathing thing, especially acoustics and classicals. They need moisture, otherwise they can crack or warp. NOT GOOD!!!
25. Cleanliness is next to GUITAR GODLINESS!!! As much as you love cheesy poofs, your guitar does not! Wash you hands before you play guitar and wipe down your guitar after playing it. This will get rid of oils and dirt that came from you, and it will prolong the life of your strings and finish of your guitar.
26. It is a proven fact that the more you play your guitar, the better it will sound. SO
PLAY IT!!!
27. The more and more you play, your body starts making things easier. Besides remembering what to do, it develops calluses, which make fingering much easier and less painful. It increases your strength so those chords and those bends are now much easier.
28. Keep your guitar in tune. Not only will you sound better, but your ears will also learn the
correct notes, and tuning will be much easier.
29. When you are in one of your messing around sessions, listen to the guitar and its
differences when you play fret to fret. This will develop your ear and help you catch mistakes.
30. Change strings more often than not. If you feel the strings getting gritty, change them. If you see fret marks on the strings, change them. If your guitar just does not sound the same, and is harder to tune or keep in tune, change your strings.
31. Learn how to change your strings.
32. Treat your guitar nicely. Donʼt rip jacks out of it, keep it clean and shiny, and respect it. And most of all do not use it as a bat, sled, or paddle, unless you are in a survival situation.
33. It is okay to name your guitar. I do!, Elizabeth, Bumble Bee, Black Beauty, and Zoe.
Judge not lest ye be judged!!!
34. Donʼt worry about developing your style — it comes out naturally.
35. Donʼt pigeon hole yourself! Learn the basics, and learn everything you can related to the guitar. If you want to be a shredder, learn bluegrass. If you want to play folk, learn flamenco! You would be surprised what you can learn from other forms of music!
36. Given the opportunity, learn other instruments. I play clarinet, drums, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, bass guitar and a bit of piano/keyboard. Guitar is my number one, but playing these other instruments has only helped my guitar playing.
37. While stage presence is an important facet to showmanship, do not go overboard with it, unless you have a good dental plan and can cover up extreme pain in front of a large crowd. (When I smile I can show you why this is important!)
38. Donʼt stick to the text! Books are great! They give you a method to learn from, and show you things that might be harder to understand otherwise. But push the limits and try to expand on the lessons on your own.
39. Write your own songs. It is highly rewarding, and a lot of fun. It also may show you some areas where you need practice.
40. A great philosopher, named Jonathan Bobbe, once said “When a student asked what they need to do to become great? “A musician is only as good as the quality of what they are made of.” I can show you all of the greatest techniques in the world and push you to practice. The only way that you will become a better guitarist is if you put your heart into it, practice smart and often and have a thirst to learn everything guitar.

Gear Corner

POWER CORDS FOR POWER CHORDS.

Lets face it, there isn’t anything that is much cooler than a guitar. Whether your a single coil, or a humbucker kind of person. Zebra striped or leather tooled straps. The gorgeous curves of an acoustic, or the aerodynamic artistry of the Flying “V.” It all just says “Awesome.” (Sorry, Bagpipes! But you did beat out the Jaw Harp!) Here’s some of my favorite stuff in no particular order!

My Gear?

What do I have you ask? Well sit down young padawan, listen closely because this stuff here is what dreams are made of!

a. When I first learned guitar, I learned on a Ventura Classical, which I still have today. It has seen better days, but it is very sentimental to me.

b. I have an original Epiphone Sheraton. This is one of the guitars you see Blues legend John Lee Hooker Play. And I have to say it is one of my favorite guitars ever. You can play Jazz, Blues, rock, alternative, country, ANYTHING! And it will hold its own. To me she looks sweet to boot!
c. My Fender Fat Stratocaster, is my every day guitar. This is probably the one you will see me with at lessons. This is a HSS style Strat, meaning that it has a hum-bucker at the bridge, single coil pickup in the middle, and single coil pickup at the neck. It can produce that true Fender Strat “Quack”. I love to play funk, and rock on this one.

d. I also Have a limited edition, custom, Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty. This is that Black Les Paul with the three P90 pickups. I like it cause she feels like my Sheraton. And if you need a guitar to growl, look no further!

e. My acoustic/electric is a Martin. Nothing real special, but I played about 8 of the same guitar, and this one just sang for me.

Luthier

For those of you who do not know what a luthier is, a luthier is a musical instrument maker. I tell you what, they do not get much better than Jay at Saphyre Guitars. He fixes guitars, and always returns them in “better than you gave it to him” condition. He also builds guitars from scratch. And Let me tell you, I am sure you will not regret getting one of his instruments. They are beautiful in every way, and I want one...BAD!!! Check them out at http://saphyreguitars.com/ (http://saphyreguitars.com/)

Well, that is about all I have currently. I do like to record, so I make good use of all this stuff. If you have any questions about any of it, just let me know!

Cool stuff out right now.

(Be sure to check out the news page for links and such)

1. Electro-harmonix Voice Box. A really cool way to sing multiple part harmony (solo) with your guitar!

2. Did you know that Naperville has its own high end amp manufacturer? Check out Victoria Amps. Bringing back the Fender Tweed amps and more! They Also fix vintage amps.

3. Martin Guitars

4. Taylor Guitars

5. Check out Planet Waves, they have tons of cool stuff!

If you have questions on any gear, let me know. I will help you out, or find someone that can. ME, IN A NUTSHELL. LIGHTLY SALTED.

Hi there. My name’s Jon Bobbe, and I live in Naperville with my wife and loveable, loyal yellow lab, Kona. I’ve been playing guitar for over twenty-seven years. During this time I’ve had the fortune of learning classical style guitar, being in numerous professional bands (ranging from punk to jazz to classic rock to blues), I’ve run sound for various performances and have enjoyed lots of studio time. Music may be my life, but teaching is my passion.

I will be the first to tell you that I am not the supreme expert in all things guitar. What I will promise you is that I am as approachable and unassuming as they come. That means no yelling if you miss a note, no crazy ego and no intimidation factor whatsoever. Just someone helping you achieve your goals at every lesson.

For me, when it comes to teaching, I love those "light bulb moments" where you almost audibly hear the click of someone understanding something they didn’t before. Because of that, I like to teach at your level, and won’t push through your lesson and run out the door when the time is up. Oh, and I want you to have fun and enjoy your lessons — isn’t that what music is all about?

Put simply, whether you’re 5 or 95, if you have the physical ability to pick up a guitar and pluck the strings, you can be taught. And I want to teach you.

Give me a call or send me an email. Let’s pick up music together.

I am not your typical guitar instructor. Besides the lack of the mandatory long hair, I think you will find me to be an encouraging and approachable individual — I really want you to succeed at guitar! I call it achieving the AH! HA! moment—that moment of clarity that comes when you achieve the next level of “Guitar Zen.” Best of all, if you are in the greater Naperville, IL area, I come directly to you — saving you time and hassle. Please check out the site, and may I suggest to first check out my introductory video? You can get a glimpse of who I am, and then explore the rest of the site!

To make sure that you and I are a good fit, I offer a free first lesson. If I meet your expectations, I then offer your first month lesson at a discounted rate of $75.00. If you decide to continue with me, my rate is $105.00 a month for a one half-hour lesson per week in your home.

It is more important to play a chord correctly than fast. Especially in the beginning. Play a chord so that you can play each string individually and hear the note ring out. When you are learning chords you are developing muscle memory. Pretty soon your fingers will know what shape to make, and others chords will come more naturally.
